Our History

Since 1849
Ashland Terrace is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity and independent living community for vibrant older women. By privately subsidizing resident rent, we offer an affordable, welcoming home that is a unique part of the greater Lexington community.
Our mission has remained constant: the staff and Board of Directors are dedicated to providing a secure, friendly, and affordable home for women 60 and older. As a senior living community, we nurture residents spiritually, physically, and mentally so they don’t just retire—they thrive.
Ashland Terrace traces its roots to the 1849 cholera epidemic in Lexington, when it was known as the “Home of the Friendless,” caring for women and children left destitute by the illness. After the epidemic, it became the “Old Ladies Home,” and in December 1923, it was formally incorporated under that name.
In the Spring of 1960, we opened at our current location, 475 S. Ashland Avenue, still as the “Old Ladies Home.” In the 1970s, at the residents’ request, the community was renamed Ashland Terrace, a title that reflects the dignity and vibrancy of our home today.
